Part 13

“…You’re from my school, right?” Miu was still trying to gather herself.

“Umm…well…yeah.”

Rei came running up to his flustered sister. “Miu, are you OK?”

“Rei…”

“Who are you?” Rei asked the unknown girl. There was a hint of hostility in his voice. Ever since that incident with his parents, he has an inherent distrust and suspicious attitude towards all Adepts.

“Aah, well, I’m…”

“Rei, she’s Himeshiro, an upperclassmen from my school.”

Miu was able to calm down a little after Rei was by her side again.

“Himeshiro? I think I know about her…or maybe not.”

“How could you not know about her? She’s like a celebrity at my school!” Miu proclaimed. “Her nickname is the “Guardian Angel”! She helps protect the school, and when students get violent and out of control, she’s there to mow ’em down, and umm…”

Miu’s thoughts were pinball’ing around inside her head, and she just keep talking and talking to the point where Himeshiro started to feel a little embarrassed.

“Hey, umm…could you stop with that? Your name was…Miu, right? That person you just described, that’s not really me. I don’t know who started all of that “Guardian Angel”, but a name like that is pretty embarrassing for me…”

Miu’s pupils started to get bigger. She couldn’t help herself; she just kept on talking.

“No way! You’re definitely like a guardian angel for our school, I think it’s perfectly appropriate for you! You’ve heard about it, right Rei? That “Obsidian Corps Incident!””

“Hmmm…nope…haven’t heard of it. Sheesh.” Rei gave his sister a blank stare.

“That’s because you totally shut down when you hear rumors about Adepts, Rei…and that’s nooo good! You need to be more like an antenna; get some more information!”

“Yeah, sure.”

For Rei, fighting against that feeling Miu described was like constantly pressing against a mysterious force that just wouldn’t give way.
